Why these letters are so wide
They are full-width characters. They were created to sit alongside Chinese, Japanese and Korean ideographs, which all occupy a square cell: a normal Latin letter would have looked tiny beside them. A wide version of the Latin alphabet was therefore encoded to match that grid.
The vaporwave look
Vaporwave, born online in the early 2010s, adopted these characters for their old-Japanese-interface feel. Paired with purple gradients and Greco-Roman statues, they became the genre's visual signature — and then a bio style of their own.
Twice as long: watch out
Full-width text takes roughly double the width. On an Instagram bio capped at 150 characters, you hit the visual limit twice as fast, even though the character count itself is unchanged. Keep this style to one word or a short line.
