Why convert WEBP to PNG at all?
WEBP was built for the web and it is very good at it — smaller files, transparency, animation. The trouble starts everywhere else. Plenty of desktop software, older image editors, some office suites and a fair number of print workflows still refuse to open a .webp file. PNG is the format nothing argues with.
The conversion is lossless in both directions of quality: WEBP already decoded the pixels, PNG stores them without further compression loss. Expect the PNG to be noticeably larger — that is the price of universal support, not a defect.
Transparency survives, and that matters
A logo or a cut-out product shot usually carries an alpha channel. Converters that flatten it onto a white background quietly ruin the file, and you only notice once it is placed on a coloured layout. Does converting lose image quality?
No. WEBP is decoded to raw pixels and PNG stores them losslessly, so the visible image is identical. Only the file size changes.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the WEBP?
Because PNG compression is lossless and WEBP is usually lossy. A three to five times increase is normal and expected.
Are animated WEBP files supported?
Only the first frame is converted, since PNG cannot hold an animation. For animated files, keep the original WEBP or convert to GIF.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens in your browser using a canvas; nothing is sent to a server.
